Unified Soccer brings students together through teamwork, joy and inclusion

Students across Lake Washington School District recently wrapped up the third season of Unified Soccer, a program that brings together students with and without disabilities for a shared experience centered on teamwork, connection and the joy of sport.

Unified Soccer is designed to create meaningful opportunities for students of all abilities to participate in athletics. Students with disabilities, known as Unified athletes, take the field to compete, while general education students, called peer partners, help support the team experience. Peer partners assist with setup, warmups and substitutions, ensuring every athlete has the opportunity to play and feel part of the team.

The 2025–26 season featured three match days across the district, with two games played at each event. Teams competed in a 5-on-5 format with 10-minute halves, allowing for fast-paced, engaging matches while ensuring broad participation. Schools rotate players frequently due to strong interest, allowing many students the opportunity to participate.

“Unified Soccer is the brightest part of the year,” said Jennifer Bendix, Program Specialist in Special Services. “Students of all abilities engaging and encouraging each other brings hope for our future.”

While games include scoring and spirited play, the focus is not on competition or standings. Instead, the emphasis is on inclusion, participation and shared success. Athletes celebrate goals, cheer one another on and build relationships that extend beyond the field.

The final match day, hosted at Juanita High School, highlighted the energy and spirit of the program. Teams from across the district came together for a morning of play, supported by families, friends and school communities. School student leaders created team posters for players to stand behind during pre-game photos, adding to the sense of pride and belonging.

Throughout the season, peer partners played a critical role in supporting athletes and shaping the experience. From organizing rotations to encouraging teammates during play, their contributions helped ensure a positive and welcoming environment for all participants.

“Unified Sports is a place to go and feel the true joy that sports can bring,” said Jason Thurston, Athletic Director at Juanita High School. “The athletes and partners are out there playing for love of the game and being with one another.”

For many students, Unified Soccer represents their first experience participating in organized athletics. Schools have embraced this milestone by providing team and individual photos, giving families the opportunity to celebrate and remember these meaningful moments.

Attendance at matches has continued to grow, with families, classmates and school staff turning out to support the teams. Many who attend walk away recognizing the unique and powerful impact of Unified Sports.

“When we can partner the games with a varsity event, people often say Unified was the best part of their night,” Thurston added.

Now in its third year, Unified Soccer continues to build momentum in Lake Washington School District. Staff and organizers hope to expand Unified opportunities across all sports seasons, giving even more students the chance to participate.
